SUPPORT

BLADES OF CHANGE

Blades of Change is an innovative arts initiative founded in 2017 by Pacific Northwest artist and educator, Jill Drllevich. Blades of Change obtained over 200 fan blades originally intended for the Satsop Nuclear Power Plant in Elma, Washington, which ultimately was never built.

Today, these iconic pieces of history are given new life as monumental pieces of art. Each nuclear fan blade stands 6 feet high, and 4 feet wide and are made from sleek, black fiberglass with industrial serial number stamped on the back. Through artists’ hands, each repurposed nuclear fan blade becomes a vessel for intergenerational storytelling, a platform for quieter voices to become loud, a place for forgotten histories to be remembered, a beacon of peace and humanity.

"On March 1, 1954, the United States government dropped the Bravo bomb—the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated by the U.S.—on Bikini Atoll within the Marshall Islands. The Bravo detonation was the equivalent of more than 1,000 Hiroshima-sized bombs.
March 1 is a national day of mourning for the Marshallese, it is a day when people gather to reflect and remember those whose lives were lost, but also to address the issues that continue to impact the Marshallese today." - Holly Barker, Burke Museum
